The History of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in Detroit

In 1967, with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit throughout the world and at the end of Vatican II, we here in Detroit, under the leadership of Cardinal John Dearden, were invited to open a small office over his garage in his residence on Boston Boulevard.   This office moved to Precious Blood Convent and included a bookstore for renewal materials.  Fr. Bob Duggan, a Basilian priest, became the director and served the many charismatic groups that were developing throughout this archdiocese.

The purpose of having an office and a center was to:

             1. Keep the renewal orthodox and Catholic.
             2. Teach and train lay leaders.
             3. Provide opportunities for growth and formation in the Holy Spirit (Life in the
                                  Spirit seminars).

A Liaison to the Cardinal was named to see that these goals were met.

Through the years the renewal office has moved to five different locations.  Its focus has remained the same.  It's currently located on the grounds of Manresa Jesuit Retreat House in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan
.
The "Vision" of the DCCR is "Jesus lifted up, drawing all men to Himself through the power and charisms of the Holy Spirit, to the glory of God Our Father."  The Mission Statement of the DCCR is as follows:

The Detroit Catholic Charismatic Renewal (DCCR) is a local expression of the new outpouring of
the Holy Spirit in the Archdiocese of Detroit as a part of the broader renewal within the church.

Its mission with the approval of the Archbishop of Detroit is to foster unity, holiness,
and action through charismatic prayer groups and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

The CR consists of thousands of people who have experienced this basic conversion, and in yielding to the power of the Holy Spirit use these gifts (charisms) of Pentecost in service to build up the church.  The basic gifts used are Teaching, Prophecy, Healing, Evangelization, Tongues, Wisdom, Knowledge, and Discernment.

In the Archdiocese of Detroit, there are close to 60 prayer groups currently in parishes and homes.  The director of the Detroit Catholic Charismatic Renewal Center is Arlene Apone, who has served the DCCR since 1983, and who serves as co-liaison with Fr. John Esper to Cardinal Adam Maida.

The CR has the international office in the Vatican in Rome and is active in every country in the world.  In the USA the national office is in Virginia, called Chariscenter.
