Arlene Apone has recently been nominated and elected as chairperson of the Association of Diocesan Liaisons to the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. This role includes being a consultant to the National Service Committee, a body of leaders in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal who work together “as discerners of the Spirit” to serve the Lord in “renewing the grace of Pentecost in the life and mission of the Church” (Vision Statement). Arlene has been active in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal for over 30 years. Mrs. Apone is the associate liaison for the Catholic Charismatic Renewal to the Archdiocese of Detroit, and the director of the Detroit Catholic Charismatic Renewal Center. Arlene attended Madonna University and Sacred Heart Seminary, pursuing degrees in religious education. She also completed courses in spiritual direction from both institutions. Arlene is certified in pastoral ministry with the Archdiocese of Detroit. Mrs. Apone is a teacher and has published five books: she authored the Wind & Fire Life in the Spirit Seminars; she edited A Pilgrim's Way, a six-month bible study; she co-developed and co-authored the inner-healing development program, The Shepherd Groups, Year I. She went on to develop and author The Shepherd Groups, Year II, and The Jesus Course for The Shepherd Groups, Year III. Most recently, Arlene spearheaded the publishing of a bible study, entitled Paul's Letter to the Romans, written by members who participated in the Holy Spirit Institute under Arlene's direction. All these books are available through the DCCR Center. Mrs. Apone also serves as a conference speaker and retreat director. She has served as a past chairperson of the Association of Diocesan Liaisons to the Catholic Charismatic Renewal and as a member of the National Service Committee Council. Arlene is widowed, has six children and eighteen grandchildren. |

Seven Characteristics of the Work of the Holy
Spirit in Charismatic Renewal |
|
1. The grace by which Jesus is known and loved and recognized as Lord.
2. The restoration to the church of the Trinitarian object of its worship, including an understanding and love of God the Father. 3. Strong and joyous praise. 4. Exercise of the gifts of the Spirit. 5. Real power for holiness. 6. A desire, not just that the world end, but that the glory and majesty of Jesus be revealed for the whole human race to see. 7. Evangelization. We must remember that the renewal is the Lord’s work. To fan the flame means to yield more deeply to what He has already conferred upon us – it is not to “stir up” a grace out of our own resources. We didn’t stir it up at the beginning. We’re not going to accomplish anything by a human-directed repetition of the enthusiasm and excitement of the early days. To try on our own to “stir it up again” is to make a work of God into a human work. |
If we will repent, if we seek the face of the Lord, and if we will begin to pray and tarry with Him and learn from Him and repent everyday of our lives as we praise Him, this renewal will finally realize God’s intention. It will be a glory that no one could imagine. Think if all the Christians in the world were in love with Jesus Christ and in love with each other, making one unified body, offering light and hope to the rest of the world. What a possibility for evangelization! That’s what God wants. If we yield to what the Lord has poured out upon us, the world will know that the church is truly the spouse of a living Lord. He is the Spiritual Advisor to the Mother of God Community in Washington, D.C.) |

What is Baptism in the Holy Spirit? “What the New Testament describes, with reference to the charisms, as visible signs of the coming of the Spirit is no longer merely ancient, past history – this history is becoming a burning reality today.” Pope Benedict XVI
Baptism in the Holy
Spirit is an experience of the person of the Holy Spirit bringing alive
in new ways the graces we have already received through our baptism.
And it’s the Holy Spirit coming and bringing new gifts in our lives. In 1967, at Duquesne University, the Holy Spirit ignited the flame of a new Pentecost within a small group of faculty and students – a powerful burst which resulted in the “baptism in the Hly Spirit” and the begibsp; The flame leaped and spread to other universities across the United States and around the world. Today, the lives of over 100 million Catholics have been touched by the power and love of the Holy Spirit. |
