A Bulletin Brief from the USCCB Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities

Studies published … in the journals, , Call, and Science, offer new hope for advancing stem cell research and therapies while fully respecting the dignity of human life.  Scientists in Japan and Wisconsin used four genes to “reprogram” ordinary adulthuman cells, creating “induced pluripotent stem cells (IPS cells).…

Thus the goal sought for years through failed attempts at human cloning – the production of “pluripotent” stem cells that are an exact match to a patient – has been brought within reach by an ethical procedure.  The technology avoids the ethical landmines associated with embryonic stem cell research: it does not clone or destroy human embryos, [and] does not harm or exploit women for their eggs.….…

This advance reminds us once again that medical progress and respect for human life are not in conflict….

Cardinal Justin Rigali, Statement on Stem Cell Breakthrough, Nov. 20, 2007

LOTS OF NEWS
from Arlene Apone

Beloved!

It's hard to believe THE AMAZING GRACE CONFERENCE is now 8 months behind us! The DCCR Office has a thick file of letters and mail recounting wonderful life changing stories and powerful healing witnesses from that blessed conference.  We can only remain grateful and continue to listen to the Lord as He leads us into these next 40 years.

Within months of the closing of the conference, we clearly heard the WORD that this is a new era and we now must prepare many who are called to EVANGELIZE. So we have spent this past summer training those whom the Lord called (38 people) to a 24 week course of preparation. I am so excited as are they. All have remained faithful, committed, and are excited to see where the Lord will place them in this work of evangelization, confident that He will open doors.  He has, as always, been faithful, evidenced by the fact that nine different parishes have already invited us for ministry at the time I'm writing this article. The folks are prepared to remain in these parishes anywhere from one to three years. They will take parishioners through "A Pilgrims Way" Bible Study, which will bring them into an experiential knowledge of the Holy Spirit and Baptism in the Spirit. They will learn to listen to the Lord, and they will receive the Charisms of the Holy Spirit.  They will also develop a deeper relationship with God's family and grow in the discernment of His will in their lives. I am in awe of the folks God has prepared to send forth into this work. If only you could hear their wisdom and the gifted teachings they presented, your spirits would soar as does mine. Pray for them as they go forth, and from time to time I will invite them to share articles about their experiences in the parishes.

This bulletin is coming to you in October, so I will be a fourth of the way into my new makeover. Two new knees and two new hips have been about ten years over-due, so this will be the year for the new bionic, titanium-filled woman to emerge. As you can imagine, most of 2008 will be in recovery and therapy* but I intend to stay as busy at home as time and energy permits.  Ila Mae and Darlene will capably run the office and we'll be in touch regularly.  If all goes well, I should celebrate Christmas as a new and stronger woman, and ready for another good run around the block!

*Update:  As of the middle of February 2008, one of the two hip replacements and one of the two knee replacements has been successfully completed and all is going well, so Arlene is half way through these operations.

The Assembly has some great teaching days planned for 2008 and will be sharing the writing of articles on the "NOW WORD". The importance of LISTENING to the WORD is everything.  "DO WHATEVER HE TELLS YOU."  There need be no confusion or anxiety in the Lord’s plan for us. Just listen and do it. His gift is peace; praise Him!

Each month in the bulletin the assembly members will be sharing a small block of WISDOM on the 13 areas of prayer on which we have been directed to focus. As of this October we will be in our third year and it's time for each of us to reassess our commitment. Am I called to offer prayer this next year for the same intention or am I called to another area? The 13 areas are listed on our web site. As you pray and decide which area you want to plug into for this next year, please call us at the Center and let us know (#248-593-4888).  What great power there is in such obedience and group prayer!  We are truly blessing God and one another!

"Bless the Lord, O my soul; let all that is
within me bless His Holy Name."

I love you and will be offering this year for you;
please pray for me too.

In Jesus Love,    Arlene

Congratulations!!

Arlene Apone has recently been nominated and elected as chairperson of the Association of Diocesan Liaisons to the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. This role includes being a consultant to the National Service Committee, a body of leaders in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal who work together “as discerners of the Spirit” to serve the Lord in “renewing the grace of Pentecost in the life and mission of the Church” (Vision Statement).  Arlene has been active in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal for over 30 years.  Mrs. Apone is the associate liaison for the Catholic Charismatic Renewal to the Archdiocese of Detroit, and the director of the Detroit Catholic Charismatic Renewal Center.  Arlene attended Madonna University and Sacred Heart Seminary, pursuing degrees in religious education.  She also completed courses in spiritual direction from both institutions. Arlene is certified in pastoral ministry with the Archdiocese of Detroit.  Mrs. Apone is a teacher and has published five books: she authored the Wind & Fire Life in the Spirit Seminars; she edited A Pilgrim's Way, a six-month bible study; she co-developed and co-authored the inner-healing development program, The Shepherd Groups, Year I.  She went on to develop and author The Shepherd Groups, Year II, and The Jesus Course for The Shepherd Groups, Year III.  Most recently, Arlene spearheaded the publishing of a bible study, entitled Paul's Letter to the Romans, written by members who participated in the Holy Spirit Institute under Arlene's direction.  All these books are available through the DCCR Center.  Mrs. Apone also serves as a conference speaker and retreat director.  She has served as a past chairperson of the Association of Diocesan Liaisons to the Catholic Charismatic Renewal and as a member of the National Service Committee Council.  Arlene is widowed, has six children and eighteen grandchildren.

Words of Life

It is especially incumbent upon those who, by virtue of their social or political position, must make decisions regarding fundamental values, such as respect for human life, its defense from conception to natural death, the family built upon marriage between a man and a woman, the freedom to educate one’s children and the promotion of the common good in all its forms.  These values are not negotiable.  Consequently, Catholic politicians and legislators, conscious of their grave responsibility before society, must feel particularly bound, on the basis of a properly formed conscience, to introduce and support laws inspired by values grounded in human nature.

     Pope Benedict XVI

Sacramentum Caritatis (“On the Eucharist”)

no. 83, Feb. 22, 2007

“Whoever wants to keep his life just for himself will lose it.  Only by giving ourselves do we receive our life.  In other words: only the one who loves discovers life.  And love always demands going out of oneself, it always demands leaving oneself.  Anyone who looks just to himself, who wants the other only for himself, will lose both himself and the other.  Without this profound losing of oneself, there is no life.”

Pope Benedict XVI,
Homily at St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Vienna,
Sept. 9, 2007

Seven Characteristics of the Work of the Holy Spirit in Charismatic Renewal
by Rev. Francis Martin

1.     The grace by which Jesus is known and loved and recognized as Lord.
2.     The restoration to the church of the Trinitarian object of its worship, including an understanding and love of God the Father.
3.     Strong and joyous praise.
4.     Exercise of the gifts of the Spirit. 5. Real power for holiness.
6.     A desire, not just that the world end, but that the glory and majesty of Jesus be revealed for the whole human race to see.
7.     Evangelization.

We must remember that the renewal is the Lord’s work. To fan the flame means to yield more deeply to what He has already conferred upon us – it is not to “stir up” a grace out of our own resources. We didn’t stir it up at the beginning. We’re not going to accomplish anything by a human-directed repetition of the enthusiasm and excitement of the early days. To try on our own to “stir it up again” is to make a work of God into a human work.

If we will repent, if we seek the face of the Lord, and if we will begin to pray and tarry with Him and learn from Him and repent everyday of our lives as we praise Him, this renewal will finally realize God’s intention.  It will be a glory that no one could imagine.

Think if all the Christians in the world were in love with Jesus Christ and in love with each other, making one unified body, offering light and hope to the rest of the world.  What a possibility for evangelization!

That’s what God wants.  If we yield to what the Lord has poured out upon us, the world will know that the church is truly the spouse of a living Lord.

(Excerpted from Faith & Renewal, Jan/Feb 1994, Vol. 18, Num. 4.  Rev. Francis Martin holds the Adam Cardinal Maida Chair in Sacred Scripture at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, Michigan.  He has held senior teaching posts at the Pontifical Biblical Institute and Gregorian University, and lectured throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Israel.  He is the Spiritual Advisor to the Mother of God Community in Washington, D.C.)

What is Baptism in the Holy Spirit?

“What the New Testament describes, with reference to the charisms, as visible signs of the coming of the Spirit is no longer merely ancient, past history – this history is becoming a burning reality today.”        Pope Benedict XVI

Baptism in the Holy Spirit is an experience of the person of the Holy Spirit bringing alive in new ways the graces we have already received through our baptism.  And it’s the Holy Spirit coming and bringing new gifts in our lives.
            – Charles Whitehead, National Director of Catholic Charismatic Renewal, England.

In 1967, at Duquesne University, the Holy Spirit ignited the flame of a new Pentecost within a small group of faculty and students – a powerful burst which resulted in the “baptism in the Hly Spirit” and the begibsp; The flame leaped and spread to other universities across the United States and around the world.  Today, the lives of over 100 million Catholics have been touched by the power and love of the Holy Spirit.
