One of God’s Greatest Gifts - Our Youth and Young Adults
Historic Perspective of World Youth Day
Second Article
by Dick Lajiness

When we think of the Church’s support for our youth and young adults, we can’t help but think of our dear departed Pope, John Paul II. His love for youth and young adults was evidenced in so many ways, such as his close contact and professed love for them. Some even call him the “Pope of Youth.” One of his outreaches to youths and young adults was World Youth Days. He established World Youth Day in 1984 with the intention of bringing young Catholics from all parts of the world together to celebrate their faith. His Holiness began these World Youth Days in Rome on Palm Sunday, March 23, 1986 and attended each one personally, until this past year when his successor, Pope Benedict XVI, presided at World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany. So what was Pope John Paul’s message to our Youth over those 19 years?  What truths did he wish the youth and young adults to hear and keep in their hearts?

As I explored the scriptural themes of each of his messages over those years, it became clear to me that they center on God’s love for youth and young adults, and are a call for them to do God’s will in their lives. What an honor to hear God speaking through his servant, John Paul II. Rather than try to further analyze these themes, it seems more appropriate to list them and allow readers to discern their own personal meaning – especially our youth and young adults.
